Laurie McPherson

Our family has had its share of Muskol memories over the years, especially since mosquitoes find my husband Scott, as attractive as I do! In fact one of our first and most memorable outdoor adventures together took place back in 1984. We were young and in love and planned a weekend camping getaway. With a beat up tent and a paper thin sleeping bag we set out for Falcon Lake,Manitoba. After waiting in line for a campsite for three hours we were finally directed to the "overflow" area, which we knew meant trouble. Sure enough, the overflow had prairie grass up to our knees and the bugs were as big as we've ever seen, throwing themselves on the windshield to get at us. Undeterred we drove up the road to West Hawk Lake and got a campsite. Scott fended off the mosquitoes rather badly and got eaten alive. Three minutes after Scott got the tent set up and we were ready to get cozy, the weather turned ugly and thick black clouds rolled in quickly with the wind whipping up branches and leaves. An ominous clap of thunder followed by a lightening jolt that lit up the sky was all we needed to know that we had to wait it out in the car. Sure enough the wind folded the tent up into a heap of canvas and the rain pelted down in sheets. A few hours later, we finally decided it was time to bail and drove back to Winnipeg. It was to be the first of many adventures we would share together in our 23 years of marriage and with our three beautiful children as well. We have learned a thing or two about camping and now never leave home without the Muskol. Here is a photo of us on our latest adventure, a trip to Newfoundland.
